Before he was born, the only connection that you and your little one had, was the umbilical cord. This life-giving pipe helped pass on the essential nutrition and oxygen to your growing baby. After you deliver, the cord is cut and a small portion of it remains attached to your baby’s belly button.
In the initial days, it is important to take utmost care of your little one’s belly button to avoid developing an infection.
Taking Care of your Newborn’s Belly Button
The stump of the umbilical cord that remains attached to your baby’s navel usually falls off on its own within 1-2 weeks after birth. But before that happens, you need to take proper care. Here are some ways do to it.
- Keep it Clean
When it comes to the umbilical cord stump, it is important to maintain proper hygiene. The doctors may wrap the residual cord with plastic after your baby is delivered. This is to keep the area clean. Sometimes, the plastic may come out and expose the cord. In this case, make sure you clean the area at least once a day with a clean sponge or soft cloth.
- Take care while bathing your baby
People say that you should avoid giving your baby a bath until the cord stump falls away and only sponge them. However, there is no harm in giving your little one a quick bath with water, as long as you can keep the stump dry. In case the belly button gets wet, make sure you dry it with a tissue or towel immediately.
- Take Care while dressing your baby
Your baby’s belly button is very delicate. It is also a hindrance when you dress up your baby or make him wear diapers. Make sure your little one wears a diaper in such a way that the cord stump gets some air. Take care while dressing your baby and keep the area as much open as possible.
- Let it fall naturally
It is important to let the cord stump wither away naturally. In case it takes longer than the stipulated time, do not get anxious. Avoid doing anything on your own and consult your doctor for advice.
