The Lamaze method of breathing and childbirth has been used since the 1950s and remains one of the most commonly taught types of childbirth classes. Earlier, it used to focus only on the use of controlled breathing techniques to cope with labor. However, the vision has expanded quite a lot since then. Here’s what you need to know about Lamaze technique.
What is it?
Lamaze International believes that the goal of Lamaze classes is to “increase women’s confidence in their ability to give birth.” Toward that end, women learn a variety of simple coping strategies, of which breathing is only one. The classes aim to help women learn to respond to pain to both facilitate labor and increase comfort.
What to expect in the Lamaze Course?
Typically, Lamaze class consists of at least 12 hours of instruction and include no more than 12 couples. Women are advised to begin a class at around the start of their seventh month of pregnancy. The classes cover:
- Normal labor and birth (using videos of real births) and the early postpartum period
- How to be active and informed during the birth
- Focused breathing techniques for labor
- Other relaxation techniques and natural strategies to help you work with labor pain, such as massage, walking, position changes, hydrotherapy
- Tips to help your partner encourage and support you during labor
- How to communicate with your healthcare team so your needs are met
- Complications that could arise during labor and birth, and medical interventions that might be needed
- Epidurals and other options for managing pain with medication
- Early interaction with your baby
- Breastfeeding
A Lamaze class can take place in person or online, and may be one-on-one instruction or with other couples. If you find yourself wanting more information on a particular topic – whether during your pregnancy or after birth – you can contact your instructor, who has multiple resources at their fingertips.
A Lamaze class is an investment of your time and effort, and you need to search for a class and find time to attend. But women who take Lamaze classes report feeling more confident about birth, knowing they have the best information and resources for a safe and healthy birth.
